The Lotus and the Stinkbug

This drawing was an intentional exploration of the paradox of mindfulness: how do we find stillness in a life that rarely slows down?

As I finished the drawing, an unexpected visitor landed beside the flower as if it were real. Just when we think we’ve created a perfect moment of calm, life shows up with its own ideas.

Maybe mindfulness isn’t about controlling the scene. Maybe it’s about making room for the lotus and the stink bug.

The whole moment reminded me of a Zen koan—a simple story that points toward a deeper truth, often through an ordinary moment that reveals something unexpected. It might go something like this:

A student asked the master, “How do I find peace in a busy world?”

The master drew a lotus.

A stink bug landed on it.

The lesson was complete.
